Pre-Primary and Primary: what those dance grades actually mean

Pre-Primary and Primary are dance grade stages, not school years. Here is how we place children at Grace Dance so your Reception or Year 1 dancer joins the right class.

If you have ever stared at a dance school timetable and wondered whether Pre-Primary means Reception, you are not alone. Those names come from examining bodies and describe a stage of dance training, not a school year. At Grace Dance in Worthing we place children by capability and readiness, then match that to the right class.

Grades are stages, not year groups

Pre-Primary and Primary sit near the start of a graded syllabus. They introduce posture, listening, musicality and simple sequences. A child in Year 2 can be working happily in Primary. A confident Reception dancer may already thrive in Pre-Primary. The label on the class tells you about the work, not the child's school form.

How we place children at Grace Dance

We look at age as a starting point, then watch how a child moves, listens and settles in the studio. Many Reception children join Pre-Primary A or B. Primary classes often mix Year 1 to Year 3, because that is where the syllabus and the children's focus naturally meet. If a child needs more time, or is ready for a stretch, we talk it through with you.

  • Reception: often Pre-Primary A or B, depending on readiness
  • Primary: frequently a mix of Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3
  • Placement is reviewed as children grow in strength and concentration
  • A taster helps us (and you) see the best fit in person

What this means for you as a parent

You do not need to decode every syllabus name before you enquire. Tell us your child's school year and anything useful about their energy, confidence or previous classes. We will suggest a starting point and invite you to a paid taster with the teacher they would continue with. Uniform and shoes can be borrowed for that first visit.

The right class feels purposeful and kind: challenging enough to grow, gentle enough that your child wants to come back.
